With blueprints in hand, IHTTI MIB students visit Thermes Parc in Switzerland during a site analysis to prepare for their final project.
The New Design Venture Project, as part of the Master of International Business in Hotel and Design Management programme brings real-world projects to life. The course provides an opportunity for students to take on a full-scale hotel design project, where they are expected to produce a portfolio with fresh ideas including floor plans, 3D visualisations and material samples. After 18 intense weeks, the final project is presented to the Hotel Owner, members of the Chartered Society of Designers and a team at the University of Derby.
The student-centred learning style is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to develop a project in all of its planning stages with both academic and industry based feedback. MIB student Maneuela Betancur from Colombia shared:
“
I had the opportunity to work as Guest Service Manager in a hotel, but I searched for a MIB programme in Switzerland as I wanted more knowledge. I was drawn to IHTTI’s combination of hospitality and design as I have seen the importance of design thinking when being involved in pre-openings. I am excited about this project as I believe it will help me prepare to open my own hotel one day.
”
This year, IHTTI is working together with Thermes Parc - Les Bains du Val-d'Illiez, a Swiss thermal spa and hotel in the heart of Les Portes du Soleil, the largest ski region in the world. Working closely with the management, the students will study the hotel guest rooms, private apartments, the spa and restaurant outlets for the hotel renovation and expansion project.
“
We chose to work with IHTTI School of Hotel Management because we wanted to incorporate students with an open mind in this renovation. By doing so, we differ from the competition and will be able to broaden our target market. Since we have an unfinished project, we thought – why not be innovative?” - Christine Chevallaz, Assistant General Manager at Thermes Parc - Les Bains du Val-d'Illiez
”
Following the first site visit and market analysis, current MIB student Vu hoi Cheng from Macau SAR shared:
“
It is a really interesting project concept as we transform a traditional establishment into something up-to-date while keeping the heritage and atmosphere. Visiting the site helped me with the planning as I got to see the structure of the building and experience the area
”
